About Rob Castillo

The Guy Behind RC Style Inc

Red Seal certified carpenter. Humber College grad. 20+ years building right in Toronto.

It was a Tuesday in 1998. The air was thick with plaster dust and the ghost of someone’s 1970s meatloaf. I was 20 years old, holding a sledgehammer, and staring at a wall of ugly floral wallpaper in a North York bungalow. My boss pointed. “That wall goes,” he grunted. The first swing was tentative. The second one, less so. By the third, a section of drywall exploded inward, and I felt a rush of pure, unadulterated satisfaction. This was it. This was what I wanted to do.

It wasn’t just the demolition, as fun as that is. It was the potential. In that dusty, chaotic mess, I could already see the finished space: the new island where a family would have breakfast, the clean lines of the cabinets, the light pouring in from a window that didn’t exist yet. A slick website can’t build that kitchen. But 20 years of calluses and sawdust can. And I wouldn’t trade that first swing of the hammer for anything.

The Scarborough Kid

I grew up in Scarborough. My dad was a plumber, and our weekends weren’t for cartoons. They were for fixing leaky faucets, snaking drains, and understanding how a house breathes. He had this saying he’d drill into my head while I was holding a flashlight for him in some dingy crawlspace: “Do it right, or you’ll do it twice.”

That lesson stuck. I learned that what’s behind the walls is ten times more important than the coat of paint you put on them. I saw firsthand how a small shortcut in the plumbing could lead to a massive disaster a year later. It taught me to respect the bones of a house. You can’t just cover things up and hope for the best. You have to understand the whole system, from the foundation to the roof ridge. That’s not something you learn from a TV show; you learn it by doing the work, getting your hands dirty, and occasionally getting sprayed in the face by a pipe you were sure was turned off. It was an education, and it was the best one I could have asked for.

Building RC Style Inc

After high school, I made it official and went to Humber College for Construction Engineering Technology. It gave me the technical language and the physics to back up what I’d learned in my dad’s passenger seat. For the next decade, I worked for other firms in Toronto. Big ones, small ones. I learned a lot. I also saw a lot I didn’t like.

I saw corners cut to save a few bucks. I saw homeowners treated like an inconvenience, juggled between a project manager, a designer, and a crew chief who never seemed to talk to each other. Communication was a nightmare, and accountability was non-existent. When something went wrong—and things always go wrong in a renovation—it was a festival of finger-pointing. The homeowner was always the one left stressed, confused, and out of pocket.

In 2007, I’d had enough. I founded RC Style Inc. The “RC” is me, Rob Castillo. The whole point was to do things differently. I built the company on a Design & Build model. What that means for you, the homeowner, is that you have one person to talk to: me. I’m your designer, your project manager, and the guy who’s accountable for every single nail and tile. It means less stress, fewer surprises, and a final product that actually matches the vision we agreed on at the start. It’s the “do it right, or you’ll do it twice” philosophy, applied to the entire business.

Red Seal Certified Humber College Toronto, The Beaches 20+ Years Experience

The Credentials

I’ve spent more than 20 years working in Toronto homes. I’ve restored century-old Victorians in the Annex, modernized shoebox condos downtown, and turned damp basements in The Beaches into livable spaces. Every neighbourhood has its quirks, every era of home its own personality. You learn to read them.

Along the way, I earned my Red Seal certification as a journeyman carpenter. For those who don’t know, that’s a national standard of excellence. It means your skills have been tested and proven to be at an elite level, not just in Ontario, but across the country. It’s a qualification I’m damn proud of. That, combined with my diploma from Humber College, forms the foundation of my technical expertise. But the real education has been on the job site. It’s in knowing how to respectfully update an old house without stripping its character, or how to maximize every square inch of a condo. That’s the kind of knowledge that only comes from experience.

After the Pandemic

The world changed a few years ago, and my business changed with it. The truth is, spending a Canadian winter on a ladder isn’t as appealing as it used to be. After the pandemic, I made a conscious decision to scale back my crew and shift my focus. I still take on a select number of full-scale renovation projects each year, but I’m also dedicating more time to consulting and knowledge sharing.

I found that my 20-plus years of experience were most valuable in helping homeowners plan their projects properly from the start, avoiding the common pitfalls that turn a dream reno into a nightmare. It’s about empowering you with the right information.

It also means a little more time for my family. My wife, Sarah, is a teacher, and we have two kids who are more interested in Lego than drywall, and I’m perfectly okay with that. Being a family man reinforces my approach to home renovation. I’m not just building a worksite; I’m working in the heart of your family’s life. I get it.

How I Met Víctor

In September 2023, Sarah and I took a trip for our 20th anniversary. We ended up in Spain and stayed in this incredible old apartment in the La Latina neighbourhood of Madrid. The place was beautifully renovated, with these amazing handcrafted tiles (azulejos, they call them) and sleek concrete floors. I was fascinated. I found a local blog talking about this exact style of renovation, left a comment, and the author—a guy named Víctor—actually wrote back. We ended up grabbing coffee. It was supposed to be a quick chat, but we talked for three hours about everything from building codes to the price of lumber. It was a hell of a reminder that no matter where you are, the passion for building things right is universal. If you’re curious, you should check out the work of my friend Víctor, who runs a renovation blog in Spain — Tejar Santa Teresa. His perspective is the real deal.

I’m a proud member of the Ontario College of Trades and you can see what my past clients have to say over on HomeStars.com.

At the end of the day, I’m just a guy who loves building things. If you want to see what my team does day-to-day, check out our services. And if you’re in the early research phase, I’ve put together some honest guides on kitchen renovation costs, bathroom remodel costs, and basement finishing costs based on real Toronto numbers. No fluff, just the truth from someone who’s done it a few hundred times.
